What Causes Hiccups In Babies
The cause of hiccups isnt well-understood.
What causes hiccups in babies. The reason for this is that breast milk taken with breastfeeding begins to be digested and the nerves in the diaphragm are stimulated resulting in hiccups in newborn babies as a reflex. Due to the fact that our baby is still growing and maturing his diaphragm sometimes contracts and produces fetal hiccups. Why do babies get hiccups.
Hiccups happen when the diaphragm a muscle at the bottom of the rib cage gets irritated or stimulated. Hiccups are quite normal and common in newborns and babies. Babies who are starting solids can get the hiccups if they are fed too much at once or given meals that are too large for their digestive system to handle.
The phrenic nerve which connects the neck to the diaphragm and vagus nerve which connects the brain to the stomach are important parts of the breathing process. A lot of times hiccups are caused due to gas formation in the stomach. There are several reasons hiccups might happen including low levels of carbon dioxide in the blood and irritated nerves.
The muscle contracts involuntarily or spasms causing air to be sucked into the throat. The origin of hiccups is the diaphragm and vocal cords. One theory is that fetal hiccups play a role in lung maturation.
Baby hiccups are caused by a contraction of the diaphragm and the quick closing of the vocal cords. In other words the hiccuping is caused by a spasm. When a baby suffers from reflux partially digested food and stomach acids flow back up the esophagus resulting in discomfort and burning sensation and since the esophagus passes through the diaphragm reflux can also result in hiccups in newborns and babies.
This goes for why they happen in kids and adults too. This involuntary contraction causes your vocal cords to close very briefly which produces the characteristic sound of a hiccup. Hiccups happen when a sudden force of air hits the vocal cords.
